NEC FC Left back cum left-winger Rashid Okocha has been named in the 25-man Uganda Cranes squad summoned by head coach Put Paul Joseph.
The provisional squad summoned will start preparations ahead of an International Friendly match against Kuwait on January, 19 2024 in Cairo, Egypt.
The team will first enter residential camp on Thursday, 11th January 2023 before travelling to Egypt four days later.
Okocha’s call-up is one so many football followers have been anticipating, including FUFA president Moses Magogo.
In November, Magogo actually recommended that the Westnile left back deserves a national team call-up, now he has earned it.
“Is it only me who sees Rashid Okocha as one of the most ignored yet hardworking and talented player? Many lesser talented players in my view have gotten national teams, but not Rashid,” Magogo stated then.
Okocha’s call-up comes now when he’s doing relatively well for NEC in the Uganda Premier League (UPL). He has so far created five goals, scoring two and assisting thrice.
The experience and work rate the former Onduparaka and Nebbi Central leftback adds to the team is what so many coaches would admire from a player.
“My team team is now complete! We can even win the league,” NEC head coach Hussein Mbalangu declared, particularly after acquiring the left back from Onduparaka in August, 2023.
Okocha is a free-scoring defender. He’s a quick, versatile player who can operate effectively at left back, and on either side of the flanks. His deliveries from the wings are pinpoint and so deadly!
