Senegal booked their place to the 2023 AFCON knockout with a game to spare thanks to a thrilling 3-1 victory over Cameroon at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Friday evening.

Senegal dominated early on, with Ismaila Sarr breaking the deadlock 16 minutes into the game.

The 25-year old capitalized on a rebound after a teasing pass inside the box, giving Senegal a promising start.

The Teranga Lions continued their control in the second half, doubling their lead with a goal from Habib Dailo, assisted by Sarr.

However, Cameroon fought back, narrowing the lead to 2-1 with Jean Charles Castelleto’s header on the 83rd minute.

As the pressure mounted from the Indomitable Lions, Senegal secured the win with Sadio Mane scoring their third goal just 2 minutes before the final whistle, connecting with a Pape Gueye pass.

With this victory, Senegal has accumulated 6 points from 2 games, securing their place in the knockout stage.

Cameroon faces a crucial match against Gambia on Tuesday, needing a win to progress.

Senegal’s final group match is scheduled against Guinea at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday, 23 January.
