Innocent Mwebaze Hands Cricket Cranes First Win In India

National team debutant Innocent Mwebaze starred as the Cricket Cranes picked up their first win at the Omtex ICWC in their 12-day tour of India on Tuesday.

The Cricket Cranes who are in India to fine tune themselves ahead of their maiden appearance at the ICC World Cup have not had the very best of stays in the Asian nation!

Their first five games were mixed-feeling defeats, but they were able to turn the tables around on Tuesday as they beat All Heart Academy by 7 wickets thanks majorly to the debutant who orchestrated an all out rout of the hosts.

Having been sent in to field first, captain Brian Masaba handed the opening bowling duties to David Wabwire and Mwebaze. The latter did not disappoint as he turned up with 6 wickets, making up for the 25 runs he conceded.

Mwebaze’s first wicket arrived in his first Over (2nd ball) and even though he conceded 23 runs in the first two Overs he bowled, he got his next man with the last ball of his second Over.

The youngster was understandably taken off the attack, but his reintroduction in the 12th Over witnessed him pick three wickets in that Over.

The 20 year old capped a memorial display with the final wicket as Uganda bowled out All Heart in the 19.2 Over with just 108 runs recorded.

Mwebaze was backed up by the other half of the opening pair and Kenneth Waiswa who each picked a wicket and veteran Frank Nsubuga who plucked two.

The other player that turned up for the party on Tuesday was opening batter Simon Ssesazi! The left hander has struggled for runs in this tour, but not only did he aid Mwebaze’s bowling performance with three catches, and a stumping to help Waiswa dismiss Danay Parekh, he scored 44 runs, the most by any player on the field.

Robinson Obuya 21 and Fred Achelam 24 also contributed to the runs as Uganda fetched the target in the 11.3 Overs.

It is a confidence boosting victory for Jackson Ogwang’s team who intend to leave India an evolved side ahead of the World Cup that bowls off on 1st June in the United States.

The Cricket Cranes take a rest day on Wednesday and will return to action on Thursday with two games against the same side.

They will conclude their tour on Friday with a game against Omtex ICWC who beat them by 2 runs on match day two.
