In a highly anticipated matchup, the KIU Titans and Nam Blazers set the 2024 National Basketball League season rolling at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The season opener comes 93 days after the City Oilers secured their ninth consecutive championship in the 2023 season.

As perennial contenders, KIU Titans and Nam Blazers aim to challenge the reigning champions, City Oilers. The absence of head coach Mande Juruni, who joined Rwanda’s Kepler University, leaves the Oilers vulnerable, sparking hope among the contenders to deny them a La Dacima.

KIU Titans, runners-up in the previous season, faced a significant roster shakeup, losing key players like Amisi ‘Carmelo’ Saidi, Denis Balungu, Joseph Chuma, Innocent Ochera, and Isaiah Mabeny Ater.

Notable additions, including Ivan Lumanyika and Ahmed Kassa, Denis Omara, Junior Lukadi and Tembo Kasereka, who are expected to strengthen their lineup under coach Julius Lutwama.

Nam Blazers, who withdrew from the playoffs last season, citing FUBA’s decision regarding the BAL representation, have also undergone changes.

Departures are Chris Omanye, Syrus Kiviiri, Dickson Asiku, Julius Trumane and Jimmy Williams while additions such as Michael Ngut from City Oilers, Daniel Gaaki from KCCA Panthers, and the KIU duo of Ochera and Chuma, mark a shift in their roster dynamics.

Despite the player movements, both teams harbor ambitions for a strong start. KIU Titans clinched the first-round victory 74-69 in the previous season, while Nam Blazers retaliated with a 68-57 win in the second round.
