UCU Lady Canons Hold Off Late UPDF Surge

UCU Lady Canons triumphed over the UPDF Lady Tomahawks with a final score of 68-61 in a National Basketball League encounter on Wednesday at Lugogo.

Despite leading by 36 points at one point, the Canons had to withstand a late surge from UPDF in the last quarter.

The Tomahawks struggled early on, managing only five points in the first quarter and trailing 18-38 at halftime.

However, a formidable 12-point run in the final quarter kept them in contention, making the Canons work hard for their victory.

Coach Nicholas Natuhereza utilized his bench in the last quarter, and this allowed UPDF to capitalize on the situation.

Despite their late efforts, the damage was already done, and the Canons secured their second consecutive win in the season.

Shilla Lamunu and Azidah Nabayunga played pivotal roles for the Canons, each contributing 15 points, while Sylvia Nantongo added eight points and an impressive 11 rebounds.

On the opposing side, Christine Namyalo and Stella Maris Lunkuse had 15 and 14 points, respectively.

UCU Lady Canons now boast a perfect record with two wins from two games, having defeated Kampala University Ladies in their season opener at YMCA on Saturday.

In contrast, for UPDF Lady Tomahawks, this marks their FIRST competitive loss EVER.

It’s strong to note that their brief history includes a remarkable achievement of winning the Women’s Division unbeaten, earning them top-flight promotion – In their first season in existence.

In their previous encounter last Friday, UPDF received a walkover against YMCA Lady Hamsters, who forfeited the league opener at Lugogo.

The Lady Tomahawks will aim to bounce back from this defeat as they gain experience in their inaugural NBL season.
