Africa 7s: Uganda Face Zambia After Impressive Start

Quarter Final
Uganda Vs Zambia (10:44 EAT)

Saturday, September 16
Uganda 35-7 Algeria
Uganda 36-19 Burkina Faso
Uganda 5-35 Zimbabwe

Uganda kick started their title defence in the Africa Men’s rugby 7s with two wins and a loss on day one, in Harare, Zimbabwe.

With an electrifying performance against Algeria, their first game saw them securing a resounding 45-7 victory, courtesy of seven tries.

In the second game, Uganda were given a little shock when they found themselves trailing by a try to Burkina Faso , who gave them a run for their money.

Tolbert Onyango’s charges were able to realign themselves, and were eventually able to work up to secure a 36-19 victory to overcome the slight shock.

The victory against the Burkinabè was enough to send Uganda to the quarter finals, but they had one more barrier for them to take the top spot in the pool in their last pool game.

The true litmus test awaited the Canes in their final pool game of the day when they squared off against the hosts— Zimbabwe.

The hosts entered the match with a thirst for revenge, having suffered defeat at the hands of Uganda in last year’s final, losing it 28-0 in Kampala.

For this reason, they had nothing to lose but everything to gain and for Uganda, it was a true test for their title defence.

Uganda fell short, losing 35-5, failing to register any points in the first half, and their centre looked so vulnerable, giving way to the Zimbabweans’ efforts.

With two victories and a loss on day one, the Uganda Sevens were able to secure the second spot in the pool with 7 points, behind pool leaders Zimbabwe who amassed 8 points from their two victories and a draw.

Now with their sights still set on defending their title, the Uganda Sevens will go into day two facing off with Zambia in their quarterfinal play at 10:44 EAT.
