Olympics: Bombers Enter Residential Camp In Kavumba

Uganda Boxers that will take part in Olympics have on Saturday entered residential camp as they seek to intensify their preparations ahead of the Tokyo games.

The team of 11 comprises of three olympics bound boxers – Flyweight Catherine Nanziri, Welterweight Shadir Musa Bwogi and Middleweight David Ssemujju Kavuma.

Three coaches Patrick Lihanda (Naguru), Meddy Mulandi (KBC) and Hassan Kaliri (KCCA), team manager Twaib Mayanja, team doctor Chris Mbowa and three sparing partners Owen Kibira, Nkobeza Yusuf and Nakimuli Teddy make the contingent.

The one-month camp at Kavumba Recreational Centre is fully funded by National Council of Sports.

This comes after a two-week non residential at camp.

“The residential camp has been long overdue, we are way behind other competitors in terms of preparations,” Uganda Boxing Federation Moses Muhangi told The-SportsNation.

The camp comes 73 days until the games that start on Friday, 23 July this year.

Uganda’s trio will seek to earn an Olympic medal in Boxing which has eluded the country since 1980.

Four of Uganda’s medals at Olympics have come from Boxing – Eridad Mukwanga won Silver in 1968, Leo Rwabogo won Bronze in 1968 and Silver in 1972 while John Mugabi took silver in 1980 in Munich.

“I have confidence in my fighters but I would not blame them if they do not perform to their best in Tokyo because of the poor preparations.

“We started late, there training equipments are not sufficient and there are financial constraints as well. There is less motivation from these coaches who have left behind their families yet and so on.”

Nanziri, who is set to become the first female boxer to represent Uganda at Olympics, is very anxious and ready. She stated that having a residential camp will boost their confidence boost before adding that Kavumba is a secure place.

Nanziri qualified to the games through her ranking, just like Ssemujju, after coming short at the African Boxing Championship in Senegal last year where Shadir earned his ticket after a box-off.

The boxers, among other Olympic bound Athletes for Uganda, will receive Lato Milk products until the games kickoff in Tokyo.
