Kickboxing: Inaugural Championship To Shape National Team

All is set for what has been dubbed as the biggest Kickboxing championship – PRO-AM Rankings season one.

The first edition, where over 70 fighters are expected to take part, is going to be held on April 27 at Freedom City.

In a press launch held on Thursday, it has been confirmed that the event will only cater for two categories – The Super Light Weight and the Super Light Welter Weight in the K1 Kickboxing style.

“We intend to cover six seasons of National Ranking for Pro-Am fighters. This will be an annual calendar event where all qualifying athletes from Clubs affiliated to the federation shall participate,” noted Uganda Kickboxing Federation President Patrick Luyooza.

“This event is passive, the fighters are going to be electric. The fans can’t wait to see their favourite fighters who they have followed for years. And Freedom City is going to be our home.”

This inaugural championship will be used to rank fighters from each category and determine the country’s representatives at the upcoming international engagements.

National team Coach Sadat Yiga, speaking with vigour, confirmed the development:

“I have been here since the start of Kickboxing, this is going to be the first championship of its kind. You have seen many professionals like Golola Moses, Umar Semata and the like, but no one has ever gone through this upcoming filter.

“As a coach, I will use these fights to select my players with the top performer in each category automatically making it to the National team.”

Yiga also warned the fighters to start training in time and take the fights seriously.

Uganda will take place in the upcoming Works Championships in Egypt 2020.

The National Rankings will be conducted using the elimination system. Ten championships will be selected and ranked. The overall winner, the 1st and 2nd runners-up will receive the Belt, Silver and Bronze medal respectively.
