Uganda’s She Cranes lost 48-61 to Jamaica in their last group game of the second preliminary stage at the ongoing 2019 Netball World Cup at M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England.

She Cranes who started with neither Peace Proscovia nor Mary Nuba at the front, struggled at the start despite commendable efforts from Stella Oyella.

The gap in quality between the two sides was visible as Jamaica, ranked number two in the world, exerted their dominance from start till the end.

One of the world’s best shooter Jhanelle Fowler helped Jamaica lead 13-9 before the side took a 35-20 lead at halftime and despite Proscovia’s surge into the next quarters, the Sunshine girls held on for a deserved win.

Both Uganda (4) and Jamaica (3) failed to finish among the needed top two for the semifinals slots, which were taken by South Africa (2) and England (1).

However, both sides remain in contention to finish fifth in the competition as the placement games for 5th/8th start on Friday.

This means that Jamaica play Zimbabwe while Uganda face Malawi to qualify for that fifth-place play-off.

It should be remembered that this is Uganda’s third appearance at a World Cup stage – The side finished 12th (joint 13th) in debut appearance in the 1979 World cup hosted in Trinidad and Tobago. Uganda came eighth in 2015 in Sydney, Australia.
