Uganda Cricket Association Hands Contracts To 12 National Team Players

Cricket governing body in Uganda, the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has issued out 12 contracts to Cricket Cranes players, its official.

The 12 players have been part of the initial training squad of 26 that has been in camp under new coach Lawrence Mahatlane.

UCA has said that the basis of selecting the 12 was done by the selection committee with the guidance of Mahatlane.

The contracted players will each be assured of a monthly stipend from Uganda Cricket Association as well as medical, lunch and transport allowances.

The contracts will be reviewed every after three months.

“We have rewarded the boys who have showed the greatest character since i have been around, however, there are no guarantees for them of making the final 14-man squad to either Namibia or Jersey,” said Mahatlane.

“Therefore, I hope the guys don’t get complacent, but continue to improve their game and become great ambassadors for Uganda Cricket.”

Martin Ondeko, Uganda Cricket Association CEO says that the initiative is one of the steps they have taken as they move towards achieving their target of earning an ODI status.

He added: “We have to invest in the greatest assets in this process who are the players. We have reached a level where the players are now semi-professional and our commitment to this as an association is to make sure we remunerate the players.

“The contracts should be a motivation for every player and should also create more competition within the side.”

The Cricket Cranes are preparing for the second round of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Jersey in September, however, their immediate focus is the upcoming tour to Namibia in April.
