Plascon Adds Layer To Uganda Cup, Kickoff Dates, Format Revealed

Leading paints company in the country, Kansai Plascon, has boosted the Uganda Cup in a two-year deal.

Plascon joins title Sponsor Stanbic Bank for the knockout club competition held annually under the Football Federation of Uganda.

The Paints company has contributed Sh132m for the next two years, the amount which was revealed on Friday in a press briefing at the company’s offices at 2nd street in Kampala.

Santosh Gumte, the managing Director of Plascon paints, said: “I am very honoured to have come on board, we are always associated with Sports, we have always wanted to associate with Uganda Cup because of its rich history.”

FUFA 3rd Vice President Hon Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi commanded Plascon for developing Ugandan sports and encouraged them to grown wings to Women football as well.

“We are excited to see that the Uganda Cup continues to grow, this is good news for the game,” stated Nakiwala. “I wish to encourage plascon to explore more opportunities in some of our tournaments that they haven’t joined like Women football that is on a high rise.”

Nakiwala also confirmed an increase in this year’s prize money from Sh132 to 166m:

Winner – Sh50m
Runners-Up – Sh20m
Semis – 12m
Quarter – Sh6m
Round of 16 – Sh3m
Round of 32 – Sh1.5m

FUFA Competitions Director Hajjat Aisha Nalule

Last year, the tournament was halted before end and later declared null and void due to Covid19 pandemic.

FUFA Competitions director Hajjat Aisha Nalule revealed that this year’s tournament will start on the round of 32 with only Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League clubs.

The tourney will kickoff on Monday, April 5 until the final on July 24, 2021 at a yet to be confirmed venue. The ties will be played home and away beside the final.

The winner of the competition represents Uganda at the CAF Confederation Cup, the second most prestigious tournament in African club football.

Proline are the defending champions having won the 2018/19 championship when they beat Bright Stars FC in shootouts in a final held at Masaka Recreation ground.

KCCA and Express are joint record winners with 10 titles while SC Villa have nine to their name.
