Uganda managed to beat Nigeria on Monday to set up a do or die clash with Tanzania at the ongoing qualifiers of the 2022 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup of the African Region.

Ronald Opio (30) and Ronald Lutaya (22) combined for an impressive opening partnership before the former lost his wicket at 58/1 in the 15th over.

Contributions from Isaac Ategeka (22), Pascal Murungi (38) and Joseph Baguma (32) propelled Uganda to 207/9.

Needing 208 to claim the win, Nigeria lost three wickets for just 15 runs before succumbing to an 82-run loss thanks to big contributions from man of the match Baguma (5-22) and Akram Nsubuga (2-16) with the ball.

This is Uganda’s second win after the side beat hosts Rwanda, in a tournament they started with a loss against Namibia.

Namibia beat Rwanda by 111 runs in the other Monday game to go level on points with Uganda.

In a five-team group, only the top side will qualify to the World Cup next year in West Indies. Tanzania, Uganda and Namibia all have a chance going into Wednesday’s last group games.

Uganda have to win with a hefty score to topple Tanzania who bosses with a Net Run Rate of 1.560 against Baby Cricket Cranes’ 1.292.
